Middlesbrough Season Preview – Part 2

Posted by Jarv on August 8, 2009

This is part 2 of A Middlesbrough Season Preview, if you havn’t already read part 1 here.

Normally this would be the time to ask where the big name signings are but with us not expecting him this season, we look to the young players and youth team graduates. This could be the big season for many of them. Adam Johnson has been waiting for his chance for a good few years to step into Downing’s place and many feel he’s long overdue his chance. He’s played in this league before too which will help him, he is probably the player Boro fans are most excited about having a chance this year. As well as him we’ve got Wheater, already proven to be a solid defender, more experience can only help. Didier Digard, the young Frenchman looks like he could be some player if he manages to stay injury free, he’s big, strong, has a good range of passing and rumour has it he can strike a ball better than many. The likes of Nathan Porritt and Rhys Williams may also finally get their chance this season, Nathan Porritt has long been touted as a future star for England, time will tell but at least he’s likely to get a chance in the championship. Williams went on loan to Burnley last season and was impressive and in pre season he has scored 4 goals, playing in several different positions in defence and midfield. His versatility will hold him in good stead. There are more but those will come to light during the season.

The main question for the season; is Gareth the man to take us back up to the premier league. Many say no, few say yes. What we can say is that he is a man who wants to do well for the club and has a passion for Middlesbrough FC.

Going down was gutting, we can’t pretend it wasn’t. The silver lining is there though. We’ve got a good chance to rebuild and a solid base on which to do it. Good young players, many of which are Middlesbrough fans and like all those who go to watch week in week out, they want the best for their club. With a little bit of experience added to this by Southgate, funded by the ever present and ever willing Gibson I do think there is a good chance we can bounce straight back. I think that’s the sort of optimism this season should bring.

Middlesbrough season preview – part 1

Posted by Jarv on August 7, 2009

A new season upon us, but it’s not quite the same as usual for a Middlesbrough fan. More often than not we get to the start of a season predicting the inevitable relegation battle that awaits us, wonder why we aren’t splashing the cash on big name signings and question sales of fan favourites. That was a premiership team however. This season, there is a somewhat unfamiliar air of optimism coming from a lot of the fans (of course, there are still the traditional pessimists lingering around). Most of us are daring to predict we might challenge for the top 2, at the least the top 6 and into the playoffs. We accept that our best players of last season will have to leave, Downing gone already and everyone surrounding the club amazed that Tuncay is still here. Though we imagine its only a matter of time until he does go.

Incoming we’ve brought Leroy Lita. A risky purchase on the face of it, he’s not had that many games over the last 18 months or so, and he’s allegedly got an attitude problem. I suppose anyone would though, if you were stuck in a job where you weren’t happy and they wouldn’t let you leave nor give you a chance to prove yourself to anyone who would be willing to take you anyway. Again though, there is optimism with regards to this signing, the man has proven he can score goals, especially when it comes to the championship with a record of around 1 in 2. Not only that, he seemed very very positive in his press conference, delighted to be here or at least away from Reading and seemed sure he could prove himself to be a good player. Other signings have come in Mark Yeates, an exciting prospect for either of the wings and Danny Coyne, an experienced goalkeeper which we were in need of. Hopefully he can prove to be an astute signing.
