England are going to South Africa

Posted by Jarv on September 11, 2009

England are going to South Africa, but then again you all knew that, unless you’ve been living in a cave this past week. Sadly for the other home nations World cup hopes crumbled on Wednesday night.

Wales were never going to go in a group with Russia and Germany especially with Toshack in charge, You have to wonder how one group has Germany an Russia and there is a group with Greece and Switzerland  who are the toughest teams, seems a little unbalanced, then again thats the impression UEFA & FIFA give me most of the time anyway.

Scotland needed 3 points at home to Holland or at the very least a point and hope the other 2nd places didn’t manage to beat their 11 points, Unfortunately they were un-done by a bad back header. Scotland had their chances and were let down by some Heskey-esque finishing from their strikers.

Northern Ireland have surprised a lot of people in this qualification process and i hope their jump in the rankings gives them a better chance of making it to Poland and Ukraine next time around because even if they beat the Czechs next time up its a long shot for Slovenia to lose to San Marino

The Republic of Ireland have the best chance to at least claim a second place spot with 2 home games left, they could still win the group but will need to beat Italy on 10th October and then Montenegro on the 14th and hope Italy lose at home to Cyprus, Thats not likely but 3 points will guarantee them a play off i believe.

So onto England, England destroyed a good, if weakened, Croatia team who beat us convincingly 2 years ago. The Capello factor cannot be understated and every time i see a press conference he impresses me, all but banning the WAG’s from south africa only allowing them to see the players for a couple of hours after each match will hopefully stop them going out there for a holiday. the England team seems to have belief in itself and Capello went barmy when we conceeded to make it 4-1, this i like. We should be in for a good tournament and realistically the Quarter finals should be an Expectation and anything better would be a great achievement.

I expect Capello to keep everyone grounded but i also think he will be going to South Africa next june with the aim of com ing back World champions.

Heskey Should Not be in the England Squad

Posted by Jarv on September 7, 2009

7 goals in 55 appearances says it all to me, I can’t understand how he’s still there, Capello says he picks players who are on form for their clubs, Heskey hasn’t scored for his club and is struggling to get in their side. I realise Capello has something against Owen and he’s not set the world light yet either but at least he has scored.

If we must play a big man play Carlton cole, at least he doesn’t give the impression he is going to fall over every time the ball goes anywhere near him. Me personally i would actually play the 2 form players, Defoe and Rooney and the Slovenia game was a perfect opportunity to try them together up front from the start and not just for 20 minutes after half time.

Surely there are better English strikers around than having to play Heskey, Agbonlahor, for one, Darren Bent is playing well for Sunderland, Either deserve another shot rather than Heskey, I understand players like playing with him but if Heskey played for your club and managed7 goals every 55 games would you be saying oh go on have another go or would you be calling for someone else to get a go?

Mystic Jarv – International Saturday Edition 05/09

Posted by Jarv on September 5, 2009

I had a good week with the results last weekend with 9 out of 10 correct and 1 fully correct score so I’ve had a go at some of the International games this Saturday.

England V Slovenia

England have looked much better under Capello than at anytime in a long while, I have much more confidence than at anytime under Mclaren or Sven, Sven had a great record  but Capello just seems to have the right attitude, no-one gets picks because of their name they have to prove them selves, which is unfortunate if your name is Michael Owen.

Mystic Jarv Predicts 3-0 to England

England V Slovenia Match Discussion

Scotland V  Macedonia

Scotland need a win in this game or their play off hopes are gone, against Norway they looked poor after the sending off after being marginally the better team before hand. Caldwell deserved to go you can’t pull back a player as the last man when you’ve just been booked. Scotland might feel aggrieved that Norway weren’t down to 10 before them though as Riise could have been given a straight red for either nasty challenge he did and was lucky to only be booked for one of them. There is a bit of s siege mentality with the Scotland squad and anything less than a win here when Holland is next up will surely cost Burley his job.

Mystic Jarv predicts 2-1 to Scotland

Poland V Northern Ireland

Who’d have thought Northern Ireland would have a realistic chance of winning a group with Slovakia, Slovenia , Poland and the Czech Republic in it, not me for one. I would have predicted a mid table finish would have been most likely but it shows what i know.  Nigel Worthington’s men have 3 tough games left Poland and the Czech republic away and current group leaders Slovakia away and winning all 3 should win them the group despite Slovakia having a game in hand. That being said Poland is a tough place to go.

Poland V Northern Ireland Match Discussion

Cyprus V Republic of Ireland

Revenge is not the main motivation for losing in Cyprus last time, really? it would be if i were manager, I would want to go out and win handsomely, but there you go Giovanni Trapattoni is a well respected manager with a lot of Medals, I’m some bloke sat at a compute. Anyway i believe Eire will be too strong for Cyprus

Holland vs England Review

Posted by Jarv on August 13, 2009

If only England could cut out the individual mistakes, Holland have already qualified and are a good side but didn’t look overly brilliant last night, Yes i know it was only a friendly but aside from the 2 errors from English players, namely Rio ferdinand and Gareth Barry Holland didn’t really trouble the English defence too much unless we were gifting them the ball.

Jermain Defoe must be pleased with his nights work and is surely due a start along side Rooney next time out to see how they play together. Likewise Milner should be given a start with the main first 11 playing to see how he does as he played well in the limited time he was given.

Glen Johnson made a few errors but there isn’t anyone better at the moment and he does seem to be the best option at right back, Ashley cole had an ok game nothing too flash, Beckham and Young did ok for their time on the field, Lampard Hustled and made a few good passes, Carrick was steady , Rooney was his usual industious self and almost scored in the firt half which brings me onto Emile Heskey.

I don’t understand Heskey, he’s a big tall strong player who seems to get brushed off the ball and fall over an awful lot, If he’s there to be strong and hold up the ball he needs to do so because from what i saw last night his status as first choice big striker has been taken by Carlton cole. Cole was strong on the ball held it up well, made some good passes and seems to have much better technical skills than Heskey.

England Vs Germany

Posted by Jarv on November 17, 2008

Well its time for another pointless international friendly for England this week. I’m sure there are some reading this saying “ but its Germany, it’s a big game” well no actually its not it is at best a B international friendly and a lot of the big names seem to not take it seriously either.

Look at the list of absentees which include Heskey, Rooney, Gerrard, lampard, Ferdinand and Terry, arguably that’s pretty much the entire spine of the team missing. Both Ferdinand and Rooney missed the demolition of stoke city on Saturday but both Terry and Gerrard managed to play for their clubs and will no doubt most of those missing through “injury” will make miraculous recoveries for the next round of premier league fixtures and will probably play 90 minutes.

For a few players it’s a chance to impress the national manager with Call ups for Agbonglahor and Ashley young, who you might remember I said should have been called up previously. The most surprising call up for me was Michael Mancienne who I had only previously heard of playing Football manager ( a review of Football manager 2009 which can be found here) he was decent on there but then again so was Nii Lamptey. A few of the regular posters at the Away Goals Rule Football Forum have seen him on loan at Wolves this season and said he is top quality, if he should he play he will need to be.

England 5-1 Kazakhstan – The Review

Posted by Kieran H on October 12, 2008

First off, the one thing we can take from this game is that Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard do not work together in the same midfield.  This has been obvious to all but one man in the country for several years now, unfortunately the one man has happened to be the England manager at the time.  Although we did win 5-1, the fluency in the midfield was, particularly before the Kazakhstanis tired, dire.  One of these two players must be dropped, Gareth Barry was hailed as a revelation after putting in fairly average performances for England, simply because of the huge gap in quality between “average” and “Gerrard and Lampard together”  For me, Lampard and Barry, Carrick or Hargreaves should start in the centre of midfield, Lampard is simply one of the best midfielders in the world, criminally underrated in England though, due to a few bad games at the World Cup, and while a defensive player is not required next to him (Exemplified by his performances next to Ballack and Deco) he does play best next to one.

Another thing which one can learn from that match is that Wayne Rooney is not a left winger, he is a second striker.  Again, this has been obvious to many people for years, but managers seem to miss it.  Gerrard argues that his versatility is the reason that he is not the greatest England player, I would argue that Rooney’s versatility is the reason he is not in the running for World Player of the Year.

Due to his versatility, he is often played out of position to accomodate inferior players (Tevez for Manchester United, a multitude of players for England, today Gerrard)  While in itself, accomodating players is not necessarily a bad thing, in the case of Rooney it is – Rooney is potentially one of the best forwards in the world, while when played at left wing he is merely slightly above average.  Playing him as a first striker can be succesful (Manchester United ’08) but you need the players around him to make it work, players it appears England don’t have.  Rooney must play in his position or not play at all.

With regards Ashley Cole, the treatment he received was, to put it mildly, a disgrace, it makes me wonder what sort of complete idiots go to England matches that they roundly boo their own player after he makes a big mistake.  Even heard the excuse that they did it because he is a bad person and cheated on his wife.  Mentalists.
